This integrated rural development project is engaging the population of
Rodrigues in erosion control practices and a more sensitive and sustainable use of the
island's environment. Through a more rational use of forest resources and a managed flaura
and fauna, the project intends to bring about increased economic development throughout
the island, while at the same time protecting the lagoon habitats. To achieve this, it is
creating new (or rehabilitating abandoned) terraces, roads, canals, dikes, while at the
same time introducing local farmers to better horticulture and livestock husbandry
practises, soil and land conservation techniques, sustainable management of local forestry
reserves and plantation of mangroves in sensitive wetland areas. These practical aspects
are being coupled with the introduction of more effective land ownership regulations, new
Global Information System (GIS) based cadastral maps and community development initiatives
including the development of women’s self-help groups. The specialists provided are not
only managing and monitoring the overall activities of the project in association with the
local Rodrigues Services, but are also developing long-term strategies for the continued
management of the area, while at the same time providing training to local PMU staff in
the critical skills needed, increasing thus the Rodrigues in-house capacity. |
