The major objective of this two year project was the optimisation of
productivity and profitability within in small and medium scale private farming
enterprises in the target districts. Major improvements were achieved in the reduction of
post-harvest losses of perishable foodstuffs, in the sustained improvement of product
quality, and in the adaptation of locally manufactured farm machinery and equipment to
meet the needs of private farming. The project also managed to successfully promote
private investment in the entire food chain. To achieve these results, the project
established a network of modern commercial demonstration farms with improved farming
systems resulting from the transfer of western process technology for crop and livestock
production, fodder production, feed milling, slaughter facilities, milk and meat
processing and storage. In addition to its demonstration function, the project provided
technical support for farmers and their associations in the areas of food processing,
marketing and distribution. The pilot action was further supported by a programme to
establish an agricultural extension service providing on-going advisory services to
farmers in the Moscow region. |
